A mountain bike rucksack carries water, a spare tube, and a windbreaker without getting in the way of pedalling. Hydration pocket, removable back panel, waist belt: our category covers both short outings and full day enduro rides.

A rucksack for mountain biking is different from a hiking bag by its support: slim straps, a snug hip belt and a ventilated back to prevent swaying downhill. It includes a water bladder, a separate tools compartment, and for serious models, a back protector.

Choosing a rucksack for mountain biking based on the duration of the outing

For an hour of single track, a hydration vest or a flat bag of a few litres is enough: water, a spare inner tube, a multi-tool. For a day out, a 20L mountain biking rucksack leaves room for a windbreaker, snack and mini-pump without becoming a hiking bag. Beyond that, the weight increases on your shoulders and the hip belt becomes the real carrying point. The most versatile mountain biking rucksacks are those that compress with side straps when they are half empty.

Water bladder, back support and maintaining the rucksack

The hydration bladder is judged on three details: the width of the cap for filling and cleaning, the insulation of the tube in winter, and the magnet that holds the spout on the strap. The rucksack with integrated back support adds a soft plate between the shoulder blades, and it should be removable; otherwise, the rucksack can become stifling in summer on rough trails. Finally, check that the hip belt actually carries the load on the hips: a rucksack that rests solely on the straps pulls on the neck while going downhill.

Enduro, downhill, and cross-country mountain biking rucksacks

Mountain biking rucksacks are not chosen in the same way depending on the discipline. In cross-country, you seek the slimmest profile possible and easy access to water without letting go of the handlebars. An enduro rucksack assumes more volume, a fitting for a full-face helmet and often attachments for knee protectors. In downhill, carrying is reduced to a belt or vest, with back protection worn under the jersey. Evoc, Camelbak and Dakine are the brands that define this segment.
