Zippered wallet, press stud or purse format: our wallets are chosen based on the closure, capacity for coins, and leather, smooth cowhide for patina or grained for everyday use.
A wallet is chosen based on how it opens and closes: the zip around the edge keeps everything secure, the press stud panel can be emptied with one hand, and the purse format lets you see the coins at a glance. Our category includes models made of leather, canvas, and grain leather, from mini sizes to models with a gusset.
Count what you'll actually put in it: just coins, or also a transport card and a folded note. A mini wallet with a gusset fits in a coat pocket and can be emptied with one hand at the counter. A purse format with a cord holds more coins but requires some digging. Between the two, the zip around the edge opens flat, which remains the most quick way to get change.
Smooth cowhide leather patinas and retains its shape; grain leather withstands friction better at the bottom of a bag. A leather wallet is judged by its lining and the quality of the zip, as these are the two parts that tend to fail first. Compact wallets with press studs require fairly thick leather for the button to last over time. Check that the gusset stitching is doubled at the corners, as that’s where the stress occurs.
The flattest models have a zip format designed for the front pocket of jeans rather than for a bag. Some add a full-width note compartment and two card slots, making it a compact wallet. Compact wallets of the same size come in various colours and can easily slip into a clutch for a night out.
A combined wallet and cardholder saves space by eliminating the need for a second case in your pocket. Guess wallets focus on the logo, while Eastpak wallets are made from wipeable coated fabric.
