Attached on either side of the rear rack, the bike panniers relieve your back and hold the volume of a week. Sold individually, in pairs, or as a bag strapped to the platform.
A luggage rack bag attaches to the side tube with adjustable hooks and is secured with a low peg that prevents swinging. It frees up your back, something a backpack can’t do, and can be easily removed to go into the office. Models with welded fabric and roll-top closures can handle heavy rain without an additional cover.
The installation depends on two measurements: the diameter of the top tube where the hooks go and the position of the low point that secures the bottom. The adjustable hooks fit most tubes on the market, while fixed distance mounts do not. Also check the heel clearance: on a bike with a short wheelbase, bags mounted too far forward can hit your heels with every pedal stroke. A perforated platform also allows for strapping down a bag placed on top.
Three formats cater to three uses. The single bag, carried on one side, is sufficient for the home-to-work commute and often transforms into a shoulder or backpack. The pair balances the load and becomes necessary when carrying more; otherwise, the bike pulls to one side when starting and braking. The flat platform bag, placed flat and strapped down, can be grabbed and placed in a second but holds little weight. Pair-sold bike rack bags generally open from the top, not the side, which changes how you pack.
There are two differing opinions. The coated fabric with a roll-top closure, inherited from cycle touring, does not absorb water and can be rinsed off, but requires rolling open to grab an item. The covered zip, more practical for daily use, remains the weak link in prolonged rain. A waterproof bike bag on a rear rack is also assessed on the rigidity of the back; a soft wall will eventually rub against the wheel as the load shifts. The stated volume can finally be judged against the opening: a large bag with a narrow opening fills poorly. Ortlieb, Vaude and Basil respectively cover waterproof travel, hiking, and city biking.
